My favourite animal movie is MILO AND OTIS.

Thanks Adelaide, it was one of the first ones I wanted to review when the podcast started, but unfortunately not available on any streaming platforms in Australia, would you believe?

About MILO AND OTIS not being on any Australian streaming platforms:

I did not believe it!

What a shame!

I thought it was because of the copyright and the mixed rights.

When it came to the USA it was Columbia TriStar and they did have a TV subsidiary which closed way before streaming as we know it today.

[this was really BEFORE Columbia and TriStar merged - and there were deals with Warner Brothers somewhere in there!]

I think the closest that young people might come to see in 2024 is through BluRay and/or successor technologies.

A current Australian movie which was first shown at this year's Melbourne International Film Festival is RUNT based on the Silvey book.

Those people who know about dog agility training might enjoy it along with the larger story about family and community and dreams.

Also - Fat Bear Week is around. At the Katmai Wildlife Park in Alaska.

And I wondered if certain animal films which are older might not be on streaming because of different standards on how we treat animals humanely.

[Netflix, for instance, would say: "This film contains scenes of animal abuse we would not accept today" as a paraphrase of a statement at the beginning].

It was also way before anyone was exposed to Computer Graphical Imagery [by a few years] - BABE was one of the first big ones where CGI affected the crew and the story.

Thanks Adelaide, yes it could be any of those reasons - I guess I just assumed it was because no streamer thought it was worth acquiring the rights to. I was also thinking of Napoleon, which pre-dates the KBYG reviews, but it's not on any local streamer either

Hi Liz:

NAPOLEON is another pleasure and delight.

There is something about that golden retriever and its friends.

The balloons are enchanting.

Really appreciated the IMDB link to NAPOLEON.

The last time I watched NAPOLEON was on a black box. [which is to say through VHS on one of the square boxes before large-screen TVs became commonplace, at least in my world and those of my family and friends and neighbours].

The bird and the frog life are wonderful.

[Galahs and rainbow lorikeets in particular].

And then Napoleon's gradual discoveries about himself during the time he lives in the wild.

Yes - streamers do have some quality control mechanisms at least.

Though when these clash with the commercial imperative... [or A commercial imperative]

And NAPOLEON has some South Australian Film Corporation pride.

There might be some other reasons which may not necessarily apply to MILO AND OTIS or indeed NAPOLEON.

Streamers and their ways!

Well it looks like they have an incentive to beef up their kids' content, so watch that space!
